Did you know Toronto has a beach? CONDO CITY has a beach! A breath taking waterfront boardwalk and no, I am not talking about the Harbourfront. I recently trekked to the Beaches to visit a new quaint and cozy chocolate shop that recently opened up in the neighbourhood. Although Chocolate by Wickerhead is new to the area, it is actually the return of long time resident and business owner Sharon Shoot. Thank heaven she’s returned with ‘oh my god’ truffles and moist creamy fillings. Welcome home, Sharon.

    Shooting Semisweet: Extreme Weather

    snowy day

I’m back inside after 2 brutal hours of enduring subzero temperatures. I’m here in the wilds of Haliburton – The Land of Is – with my crew to film Ron and Nadine, who are shooting one of their homemade company videos for You Tube. When I first heard that they wanted to do the shoot right in the middle of their snow-covered lake, I was quite happy because I knew how nice and visual that would be – all those beautiful evergreens against the blue sky and the pristine white snow. But the logistics of pulling it off is another story.

Choco-locate in Ontario Business Report

That's when she had a "light-bulb moment" about the perfect "transmedia" extension to her documentary about "the world of chocolate," which she was proposing to shoot at locations in Africa, Europe, the US and Canada. 'Film tells the not-so-sweet side of chocolate'

What do you think of when you think of chocolate? Decadence? Dieting? An industry rife with exploitation and labour abuses?

Toronto director Michael Allcock offers a peek at the various sides of chocolate in the new documentary Semisweet: Life In Chocolate, airing on TVO on June 6. The film tells four stories – of Ron Obadia and Nadine Artemis, two raw food enthusiasts; of employees who live and work in Hershey, Pa., known as “The Sweetest Place on Earth” and more. Did you know?

Chocolate is rich in phenolics, the same heart protective antioxidants found in wine. Indulgence? I call it self preservation!
