    Follow the Chocolate Trail

    Welcome to Stratford

Follow the chocolate trail, follow the chocolate trail. Toto we're not in Kansas anymore. In fact, were in Stratford, Ontario where this trail leads you to chocolaty goodness. It is well known, "Come for the chocolate and stay for the plays". Or is it the other way around?

Regardless of your favored order, savour Stratford and take a bite out of the chocolate trail. $20 gets you an all access pass to your choice of scrumptious tastings at eight stores out of a self-guided map of 21. This golden ticket will not only satisfy your sweet tooth but give chocoholics a chance to speak directly with each chocolatier and ask them the age old question- does working with chocolate really take the sweetness out of it?

  • Chocolate and Beer Pairing

    Mirella of Beerology
When most folks think about the perfect pairing to chocolate, the plain Jane’s or traditionalists head straight to the fridge for a tall glass of milk. Boring! And then we have our connoisseurs, who start thinking red- wine that is. But what about beer? That’s right, its not just salted peanuts that go nicely with beer anymore but chocolate too! I headed down to a local pub, Highway 61 to learn the science of ‘Beerology’ at a chocolate and beer tasting workshop.

The Lure of the Dark Side

    hillary — 4 years ago

To dark chocolate or not to dark chocolate that is the question. Since the beginning of this chocolate experience, I realized it was time to explore the darker side of chocolate. I was always a milk chocolate kind of gal and very rarely do I opt for dark. Then and again before I started this project my most recent chocolate fix was a Twix bar (gasp).

    Twix ?
    The real stuff
I saw a co-worker indulging in one in private and I thought to myself, man that looks good. But now, after being given sample after sample of only the best European fine chocolate and indulged in the artisan, local, organic, fair trade variety- boy, have my tastes changed.

Choco-locate in the Media

Choco-locate in Ontario Business Report

When award winning filmmaker Lalita Krishna was in Silver Springs, Maryland, pitching PBS on her new documentary "Semi-sweet," she found herself in a mall looking for some of the sweet stuff to take to the meeting. That's when she had a "light-bulb moment" about the perfect "transmedia" extension to her documentary about "the world of chocolate," which she was proposing to shoot at locations in Africa, Europe, the US and Canada. 'Film tells the not-so-sweet side of chocolate'

What do you think of when you think of chocolate? Decadence? Dieting? An industry rife with exploitation and labour abuses?

Toronto director Michael Allcock offers a peek at the various sides of chocolate in the new documentary Semisweet: Life In Chocolate, airing on TVO on June 6. The film tells four stories – of Ron Obadia and Nadine Artemis, two raw food enthusiasts; of employees who live and work in Hershey, Pa., known as “The Sweetest Place on Earth” and more. Did you know?

Chocolate is rich in phenolics, the same heart protective antioxidants found in wine. Indulgence? I call it self preservation!
