A chocolate meal is my ideal dinner, but let’s face it, if you care in the least bit about a balanced lifestyle this probably only happens once in a blue moon. So when I discovered a dish that is both hearty, nutritious and features chocolate for breakfast you bet I was game! Mole- pronounced mó-lay- is simply chocolate chicken. But this isn’t just your ordinary chicken. This chocolate trail starts in Mexico.

Often the staple meal at weddings, Mole is not as simple as it sounds. It is VERY rarely just quickly thrown together. Sometimes taking a few days, family and friends come together to chop, stir and stew on this delightful dish. Everyone helps out to share the labour, gossip and create the dish in a very social environment. Mole holds strong traditions but many argue on its true origins.

A new generation of chocolate flavours are popping up behind truffle counters in North America. So long are the plain Jane days of chocolate and peanut butter. Hello, to lemongrass, smoky meat flavours, lavender, peanut butter and jelly sandwich, potato chips and did I mention bacon? But these flavors are not for kids. Artisan chocolatiers are making these wacky combinations for a classy crowd and infusing bars that definitely go outside the traditional chocolate box.

Here are just a few that caught our eye:

Chocolate Points of Interest in Toronto- the Cadbury Plant

    Toronto
Have you ever been in Toronto’s west end and experienced a whiff of chocolate in the air? A lucky summer’s wind might just be blowing in your direction or perhaps you’ve crossed the train tracks and are getting closer to the source.

One mid summer’s night, I decided to follow that familiar smell of brownies in the air and ended up at the Cadbury Chocolate Factory on Gladstone Avenue. Hidden away it what looks like an abandoned building is this curious plant. I decided to investigate further and find our the history of the Cadbury Factory and it’s origins.

Choco-locate in the Media

Choco-locate in Ontario Business Report

When award winning filmmaker Lalita Krishna was in Silver Springs, Maryland, pitching PBS on her new documentary "Semi-sweet," she found herself in a mall looking for some of the sweet stuff to take to the meeting. That's when she had a "light-bulb moment" about the perfect "transmedia" extension to her documentary about "the world of chocolate," which she was proposing to shoot at locations in Africa, Europe, the US and Canada. 'Film tells the not-so-sweet side of chocolate'

What do you think of when you think of chocolate? Decadence? Dieting? An industry rife with exploitation and labour abuses?

Toronto director Michael Allcock offers a peek at the various sides of chocolate in the new documentary Semisweet: Life In Chocolate, airing on TVO on June 6. The film tells four stories – of Ron Obadia and Nadine Artemis, two raw food enthusiasts; of employees who live and work in Hershey, Pa., known as “The Sweetest Place on Earth” and more. Did you know?

Chocolate is rich in phenolics, the same heart protective antioxidants found in wine. Indulgence? I call it self preservation!
