    Jordans finest

Kelly is the first to admit she is living the sweet life. Owner of Toute Sweet Ice Cream and Chocolate, Kelly puts the fun factor and the yum factor into her chocolate boutique. Her great sense of humor will have you giggling in no time, but Kelly is serious when it comes to her chocolates. “Everything is handmade. We offer single origin and fair trade chocolate,” says Kelly. Which makes it all the more sweet. A luxurious selection of Belgian chocolates here and homemade ice cream there, oh, how sweet it is!

    Wacky Chocolate Flavours

    chocolocateteam — 1 year ago

    Have your say

What the wackiest chocolate combo you have tasted?

    • Lemongrass

    • Bacon

    • Scotch

    • Mushroom

    • Sea Salt

A new generation of chocolate flavours are popping up behind truffle counters in North America. So long are the plain Jane days of chocolate and peanut butter. Hello, to lemongrass, smoky meat flavours, lavender, peanut butter and jelly sandwich, potato chips and did I mention bacon? But these flavors are not for kids. Artisan chocolatiers are making these wacky combinations for a classy crowd and infusing bars that definitely go outside the traditional chocolate box.

Here are just a few that caught our eye:

    A Chocolate Fate

    chocolocateteam — 1 year ago

You could say that Derek Barr is a strong believer in fate. What will be will be. At least that seems to be the way his chocolate trail was laid out. As a young lad he seemed the least likely to be a chocolatier. He had his sights set on the mining and engineering industry. But when the job market dipped at the same time he graduated from University he decided to switch his focus entirely.

First detour: the military. With his enrolment date booked Derek was finally sure of the direction his career would take. Then, destiny intervened when his enrolment officer mysteriously stood him up. Out of work and eager to learn, Derek was at a crossroads. So when a local chocolatier offered him an apprenticeship; a chance to learn from his wealth of knowledge, Derek jumped at the opportunity. And so his chocolate trail was set. Singing: "Que sera, sera”.

Choco-locate in Ontario Business Report

When award winning filmmaker Lalita Krishna was in Silver Springs, Maryland, pitching PBS on her new documentary "Semi-sweet," she found herself in a mall looking for some of the sweet stuff to take to the meeting. That's when she had a "light-bulb moment" about the perfect "transmedia" extension to her documentary about "the world of chocolate," which she was proposing to shoot at locations in Africa, Europe, the US and Canada. 'Film tells the not-so-sweet side of chocolate'

What do you think of when you think of chocolate? Decadence? Dieting? An industry rife with exploitation and labour abuses?

Toronto director Michael Allcock offers a peek at the various sides of chocolate in the new documentary Semisweet: Life In Chocolate, airing on TVO on June 6. The film tells four stories – of Ron Obadia and Nadine Artemis, two raw food enthusiasts; of employees who live and work in Hershey, Pa., known as “The Sweetest Place on Earth” and more. Did you know?

Chocolate is rich in phenolics, the same heart protective antioxidants found in wine. Indulgence? I call it self preservation!
