Award-winning Ontario filmmaker Michael Allcock visits a free-spirited chocolate-loving couple in Haliburton, Ontario and discovers what makes chocolate-town Hershey, Pennsylvania so special, while following the personal journey of extraordinary characters whose lives have been intrinsically transformed by chocolate. For these people chocolate drives their lives, shapes their actions, haunts their thoughts, brightly colours their dreams - and darkens their nightmares. At its darkest, chocolate production is a gateway into a world where African child labourers often suffer violence - even death. Semisweet: Life in Chocolate links stories from across Africa, North America and Europe - connected solely by chocolate. Although the paths of the characters have never directly crossed - their lives are interwoven through their relationship with chocolate.

    Paris suburb
This morning I got on a RER train in Paris and took a 25-minute ride down to the suburb of Sceaux. From the station, I started walking down a small pathway – passing rows of lavender trees and posh stucco homes. I finally came to a stop in front of a large rectangular factory building. What a strange place for a factory, right in the middle of an upscale residential neighbourhood. I walked to what looked like the entrance and was dwarfed by a pair of imposing black doors. I rang the buzzer.

A long minute passed. Was I too early? Too late?

Choco-locate in Ontario Business Report

When award winning filmmaker Lalita Krishna was in Silver Springs, Maryland, pitching PBS on her new documentary "Semi-sweet," she found herself in a mall looking for some of the sweet stuff to take to the meeting. That's when she had a "light-bulb moment" about the perfect "transmedia" extension to her documentary about "the world of chocolate," which she was proposing to shoot at locations in Africa, Europe, the US and Canada. 'Film tells the not-so-sweet side of chocolate'

What do you think of when you think of chocolate? Decadence? Dieting? An industry rife with exploitation and labour abuses?

Toronto director Michael Allcock offers a peek at the various sides of chocolate in the new documentary Semisweet: Life In Chocolate, airing on TVO on June 6. The film tells four stories – of Ron Obadia and Nadine Artemis, two raw food enthusiasts; of employees who live and work in Hershey, Pa., known as “The Sweetest Place on Earth” and more. Did you know?

Chocolate is rich in phenolics, the same heart protective antioxidants found in wine. Indulgence? I call it self preservation!
