Its time to take a stance against child labour in cocoa. This holidey season we're doing something tangible. When we screened the documentary ‘Semisweet;Life in Chocolate’ in Toronto recently, a number of people came up to me and said, “I had no idea that chocolate had a dark side. I didn't know that unfair child labour practices still exist in cocoa plantations in West Africa.” There are reportedly over 15,000 children who continue to work in cocoa plantations in Cote D’Ivoire, where 65% of the world's cocoa comes from. As a filmmaker my role is to build awareness but now we're moving to action. I'm delighted to enter into a partnership with World Vision Canada's fund that supports to end child labour. You too can join and make your contribution to this worthy cause. Make A Pledge Today!

Choco-locate in Ontario Business Report

That's when she had a "light-bulb moment" about the perfect "transmedia" extension to her documentary about "the world of chocolate," which she was proposing to shoot at locations in Africa, Europe, the US and Canada. 'Film tells the not-so-sweet side of chocolate'

What do you think of when you think of chocolate? Decadence? Dieting? An industry rife with exploitation and labour abuses?

Toronto director Michael Allcock offers a peek at the various sides of chocolate in the new documentary Semisweet: Life In Chocolate, airing on TVO on June 6. The film tells four stories – of Ron Obadia and Nadine Artemis, two raw food enthusiasts; of employees who live and work in Hershey, Pa., known as “The Sweetest Place on Earth” and more. Chocolate is rich in phenolics, the same heart protective antioxidants found in wine. Indulgence? I call it self preservation!
