After a series of phone calls, I finally sat down with multi-instrumentalist Ohad Benchetrit, who has played and recorded with BSS over the years. Ohad turned me on to his other musical project Do Make Say Think. I loved the sprawling feel of their music. Ohad told me he wanted to bring on his DMST writing partner, Justin Small. We shook hands and dove in headfirst. These are the right guys for the job.

This is my fifth day in Mali. I’m here with my producer Lalita Krishna on a scouting mission. We start shooting in 3 days and we want to make sure that all the details are in place when the crew finally arrives to film. You can only check over so many things from back home – it’s important to see stuff up close and personal. We’ve only got one shot at this and so we want to make sure that everything’s all right.
As well as double-checking our accommodations and transportation for the 10-day shoot, we also need to make sure that our interviewees –subjects for the film – are ready to share their stories.

We just finished shooting a scene with one of the Malian subjects, Souleymane Berthé, and our secondary camera, the 7D, has just died. The regrettable incident happened while we were filming Mr. Berthé in his house in the town of Kadiolo – in southern Mali. No sooner did we start rolling that he camera just went nuts on us – sputtering and blinking its evil red warning light. We had no choice but to shut it off. It simply had enough with this crushing heat. No wonder when you consider that – with the sun blazing down on Mr. Berthé’s steel corrugated roof – we estimated the temperature inside was probably into the low 50s.

When award winning filmmaker Lalita Krishna was in Silver Springs, Maryland, pitching PBS on her new documentary "Semi-sweet," she found herself in a mall looking for some of the sweet stuff to take to the meeting. That's when she had a "light-bulb moment" about the perfect "transmedia" extension to her documentary about "the world of chocolate," which she was proposing to shoot at locations in Africa, Europe, the US and Canada. 'Film tells the not-so-sweet side of chocolate'
What do you think of when you think of chocolate? Decadence? Dieting? An industry rife with exploitation and labour abuses?
Toronto director Michael Allcock offers a peek at the various sides of chocolate in the new documentary Semisweet: Life In Chocolate, airing on TVO on June 6. The film tells four stories – of Ron Obadia and Nadine Artemis, two raw food enthusiasts; of employees who live and work in Hershey, Pa., known as “The Sweetest Place on Earth” and more.
